Sofiya Ballin is an award winning journalist, content creator, artist, speaker and entrepreneur.

Sofiya is currently a host/features reporter at Philly.com and founder of #BlackHistoryUntold, Wuk Party, and The Electric Lady Series. She is an alumna of Temple University with a degree in Journalism.

While at Temple University, she was the President of the Student Organization of Caribbean Awareness. She is the daughter of two opinionated Jamaican parents, and the oldest sister to three girls, the rich culture and strong sibling ties are her inspiration and motivation.

She uses her means as a journalist and content creator to expand the narratives of marginalized communities through her work. Whether it be through a compelling interview series such as #BlackHistoryUntold, or by bridging African & Caribbean vibes with Wuk Party, or through celebrating womanhood with The Electric Lady Series, there’s nothing she hasn’t done.

#BlackHistoryUntold is an identity series created to explore the importance of a comprehensive black history education. Through personal essays, Sofiya highlighted a new piece everyday. Notable features include Professor of Africana Studies & commentator Marc Lamont Hill, Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Jazmine Sullivan, and Legendary MC of the ROOTS Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter.

The second rendition of #BlackHistoryUntold focused on Black Joy and how it had always been a part of black legacy. It expanded the #BlackHistoryUntold project with personal essays from U.S. Senator Corey Booker, Eagles Safety Malcolm Jenkins, social worker/activist Feminista Jones, Host of Fox 29’s ‘The Q’ Quincy Harris, Singer Kriss Mincey, among others.

In addition, she is also the founder of WUK Party and The Electric Lady Series. WUK Party is an AfroSOCA party with tons of reggae and afrobeats bringing the community under one roof.

The Electric Lady Series is a week long series of women-centered events offering a look internally and externally at womanhood while celebrating it’s many forms. Events within the series include an entrepreneurship panel, feminism discussion, art show, celebration party, and yoga. Sofiya continues to push boundaries with her work every day. She leads by example with her projects and initiatives. She has spoken on panels and given workshops to high school students, institutions, and programs. Sofiya is a mentor, writer, artist, and storyteller.
